But effort alone isn’t even the point.

The Psychology Behind the Hate

When someone sees a price they don’t like, it creates tension.

Not because the product is objectively too expensive—but because it challenges their internal narrative:

“I shouldn’t have to pay this much.”
“This shouldn’t be worth that much.”
“Why does this person get to charge that?”

That tension often turns into dismissal:

“It’s just another app.”
“It’s not special.”
“It should be free.”

Because admitting that something is worth the price would force a more uncomfortable thought:

Maybe they’re not the target audience.
Maybe they’re not willing to invest in things that could actually help them.

So instead of confronting that, it’s easier to attack the product—or the creator.

When Pricing Challenges Identity

Pricing doesn’t just trigger opinions. It exposes differences in life paths.

A well-priced digital product—especially one that scales—quietly challenges the traditional 9–5 model. It shows that income doesn’t always correlate with hours worked in a linear way.

And for some people, that’s unsettling.

It’s easier to call it luck.
It’s easier to dismiss it entirely.

What gets ignored is the phase no one sees—the months or years of building with little to no reward. The uncertainty. The risk. The constant struggle.

That part doesn’t fit the narrative.

So it gets erased.

The Free Illusion

Once the result finally shows up—a polished product with a confident price tag—people want access to the outcome without respecting the process.

This mindset isn’t limited to developers. Artists hear it. Designers hear it. Writers, musicians, freelancers—anyone who puts a price on their work hears some version of:

“Why isn’t this cheaper?”

Set the Standard

Not everyone is your customer.
Not everyone is supposed to be.

Trying to please everyone is the fastest way to destroy both your product and your sanity.

The people who complain the loudest about pricing are often the least invested users anyway. They want value without commitment. They are spectators—not builders.

So set the price.

Set it based on value. On intention. On the kind of user you actually want to serve.

And accept that it will repel people.

That’s not failure. That’s precision.

Because the right people won’t argue about the price.

They’ll recognize themselves in it.
